The Difference Between Wood and Plastic Frames

Wood is a relatively new and innovative material when it comes to the making of sunglasses and prescription glasses. With an evergrowing need to care for the environment and more conscious consumers, ditching conventional plastic and switching to eco-friendly wooden frames is the way to go! So what should you expect when making the transition from plastic to wood for your glasses!

Let’s start with the basic differences between plastic and wooden frames!

How is wooden eyewear different from plastic?

Frames that are made of wood differ from traditional plastic ones in a few ways. Find out exactly how these differences can factor into your purchase decision in this section.

1. They’re less susceptible to temperature fluctuations

Frames made of wood are generally better able to withstand heat and cold than ones that are made of plastic. Plastic can change in texture and appearance after a long time of being exposed to high temperatures, whereas wood remains in its original condition.

2. They’re not ideal in humid environments

Glasses that are made of wood are not suited to extremely humid places as they can absorb moisture that can damage the frame if it is not treated. When purchasing a pair of high-end wooden glasses, you’ll find that they’re almost always treated to be water resistant, such as our Kraywoods wooden sunglasses frames, in which case you wouldn’t need worry about using your glasses in such environments.

3. They’re significantly lighter than regular glasses

Wooden frames are extremely lightweight, you barely feel them on. For longer wear, wooden frames definitely offer a superior comfort when compared to plastic. If you will be using your glasses for extended periods of time, you’ll want to take advantage of the superior comfort that a pair of prescription glasses or sunglasses made of wood has to offer!

4. They’re less malleable than plastic frames

Plastic frames can easily be heated and adjusted to fit your face shape, while the same cannot be said for wood. That being said, this won’t be a problem if you make sure to choose a good fit from the start when purchasing your wooden frame!

5. They require specific cleaning tools to maintain

Wooden eyewear requires a bit of extra care to effectively maintain. As stated, wooden frames are often treated to be water resistant, but the material might not hold up to extreme levels of moisture over time, so running a pair under the tap is not advisable. Instead, it is recommended to clean your wooden glasses by carefully spraying the lenses with any glasses cleaning solution and wiping with a microfiber cleaning cloth, that way you’ll be sure to maintain your wooden frame.

Other benefits provided by wooden eyewear

Apart from the differences between wood frames and ones that are made of other materials, there are many other benefits to choosing wood frames, which we’ve covered more in detail here.

  • Each pair is unique. Most wooden frames are handmade, so if you appreciate fine craftsmanship, then you’re more likely to find that in a pair of wooden eyeglasses. Additionally, since wood is an organic material, every pair made from wood holds their unique grain, color and texture, making it a one-of-a-kind.
  • They’re eco-friendly. Wood is a much more eco-friendly material compared to plastic. More so, most wooden sunglasses brands, such as ours, use sustainably sourced wood to create their wooden frames, which is another added benefit for the environment. With plastic pollution becoming a pressing environmental issue, we should do our best to reduce the purchase of plastic in every way possible, even when it comes to eyewear!

When purchasing new eyewear, whether it be prescription glasses or sunglasses, it’s important to be informed and make the best choice since it’s something that you’ll be wearing almost daily and for long hours in order to protect your eyes and see clearly. While both wooden and plastic frames can be stylish in their own way, wooden frames have the added benefit of being extremely lightweight and therefore much more comfortable for long hours of daily wear!
