The History of Sunglasses

It is assumed the first concept of sunglasses came in the period of ancient Rome, where Emperor Nero used polished gems to see gladiator fights. Later in the 12th century, china started using sunglasses. Chinese people used sunglasses in that period when interrogating witnesses to hide their expressions. At that time, the lenses were made from Smokey quartz, and they didn’t have the technology to protect against sun’s harmful UV rays or to correct sights.

In the 18th century, experiments of tinted lenses started. During that period, James Ayscough thought that green or blue-tinted lenses could help improve vision problems and at that time, people were not concerned about the damaging effect of the sun’s uv rays. During the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century, brown and yellow-tinted glasses were prescribed to people with syphilis when they happened to experience sensitivity to the light.

In 1937, the US air force needed eye protection from the bright sunshine, and after that, they adopted the famous aviator sunglasses. These sunglasses were the Aviator G15 created by Ray-Ban and were then only used by US air force pilots for protection against the harmful rays of the sun. The aviator style glasses then went on to become a fashionable accessory during the pre and post-world war two eras. That’s not the end. In the 1950s, Ray-Ban innovated a unique plastic molding technology to manufacture the Wayfarer, which was another iconic style made by them. Plastic molding technology helped make the manufacturing of sunglasses affordable and accessible to the masses. The price of sunglasses then became affordable, making it a more common accessory among people. Even in the modern age, Aviator and Wayfarer style sunglasses are still among the trending shapes of sunglasses.

In 1936, polarized sunglasses first became available when Edwin H. Land started using his patented Polaroid filter while making sunglasses. Since their invention, the popularity of sunglasses started to increase among Hollywood actors and actresses and they soon became the leaders of sunglass trends.

Who Invented Sunglasses?

The concept of sunglasses evolved from the times of ancient Rome. Since then, it’s form and shape has changed gradually. There is no substantial evidence of who created sunglasses first. But after doing some profound research on the history of sunglasses, we can conclude that the concept of modern sunglasses was initiated by James Ayscough in the 18th century when he first thought that green and blue-tinted lenses could improve the vision problems.

Finally, at Kraywoods, sustainability and keeping the earth green is at the heart of the creation of every pair of wooden sunglasses. With a mission to aid in reforestation, a tree is planted in Kenya for every pair of eyewear purchased. With Kraywoods, not only are you reducing on plastic by choosing sunglasses made from wood, you’re also contributing to greener planet.

How are wooden sunglasses made?

Different types of woods can be used to craft wooden sunglasses, and they all have a different look. Amongst the most common types of woods used, you can find bamboo, ebony wood, walnut wood, zebra wood, oak wood, rosewood and many more types of wood. Let’s see the process that goes into the making of a pair of wooden sunglasses.

First, the wood is cut into rectangle shaped pieces, with each rectangle around 15 to 20 cm thick. Those pieces of wood are cut into strips that are wide enough for the wooden frames. The piece of wood is then placed under a machine that cuts out the programmed shape of the sunglasses frame.

Next, the rough piece of crafted wooden frames is sanded down by using hands to get a smooth splinter-free finish. When making the arms of sunglasses, the same shaping, crafting and sanding process is applied. Hinges are used to attach the front piece of the wooden sunglasses frame and the arms. To do so, holes are drilled into the wooden arms and frame and the hinges are installed to connect the parts that make the sunglasses frame together. Different types of hinges can be used such as 3 barrel hinges, 5 barrel hinges and spring hinges. Spring hinges happen to be most common as they offer a more comfortable fit when wearing the sunglasses.

Lastly, the wooden frame is polished for an appealing and smooth finish. The lenses are cut into the desired shape and size and inserted into the wooden frame manually. In the last stage, a final hand polish is done to clean the wooden sunglasses frames before placing them into their protective pouch and packaging.

What are some good types of wood to use for sunglasses?

As we know, there is a variety of woods available, but there are certain types of woods that are ideal to use for making wooden sunglasses. The most commonly used woods are Walnut Wood, Purple Heartwood, Zebra Wood, Birch wood, Maple wood, Ebony wood, bamboo, etc. All these types of woods are durable, extremely lightweight and are known for their beautiful appearance and finish. Naturally, wood is a long-lasting material, so if your frames are made from wood, you can be sure that they will last for a long time.

Why are wooden sunglasses eco-friendly?

We all know that wood is an eco-friendly and sustainable material, not only for making sunglasses but for any other type of product. When the wood is sustainably sourced, it is actually beneficial for our environment. Trees provide oxygen to the environment. They help us reduce the damage of climate change by taking CO2 and pushing out oxygen. When older forests are sustainably harvested, it promotes the regeneration of forests ensures the growth of high quality young trees to replace the older trees that were harvested. With sustainable harvest, forests are left with the best trees standing and new healthy trees growing.

More so, once the wood is sustainably harvested, it does not require any toxic or harmful chemicals to be processed before making the wood sunglasses frames. The pieces of wood are used naturally as they are and handcrafted to make the final product. It also doesn’t require as much energy use as other materials would.

On the other hand, it requires an immense amount of power and toxic chemicals to produce plastic sunglasses. Plastic materials are manufactured from crude oils such as benzene and vinyl hydrochloride, which contaminate the air and soil and are known to cause cancer. These chemicals are processed and combined with many other elements to form large plastic blocks which are afterwards sent for the assembling process. The production of plastic causes industrial waste that is immensely toxic, polluting and damaging to the environment.

Another important factor is material waste. Once plastic is used to make a product, like sunglasses for example, it lasts forever. Plastic waste is not biodegradable, it fills our landfills, oceans and our entire planet. No matter what you are going to do with a plastic item, it will end up damaging our environment forever. On the other hand, the making of wooden sunglasses does not require such harmful and toxic chemicals. the wooden sunglasses frames are recyclable and will not be harmful to the environment once discarded, unlike plastic.

Finally, when choosing wood sunglasses frames, you can be sure that you’re making not only the right choice for you, but also for the environment.
